Boston has produced some of the biggest musical acts across all genres, putting the city on the map as a musical capital for the latter half of the 20th century.
From legendary rock-and-roll bands like Aerosmith and The Lemonheads, iconic R&B group New Edition, and Gen Z bedroom pop stars Clairo and Lizzy McAlpine (who attended Berklee College of Music), to the not-so-underground house concert scene in Allston and Brighton and the yearly Boston Calling music festival, Boston has remained a contender as a musical city.

While the city has been surpassed by the likes of Nashville, Austin, and others for “best music scene” it still holds its place in the top 10 of best cities for music, coming in at number nine according to a 2024 music survey conducted by travel magazine Fifty Grande.
