Side incomes are on the rise — especially for Mass. workers.
One in three adults have a side hustle or second job to keep up with the cost of everyday living expenses, according to Bankrate. The financial literacy outlet says the average American makes more than $800 per month in additional revenue. For New Englanders, it’s even more.
Massachusetts takes first place as the state with the highest income from a second jobs. In a recent Bankrate report, 35% of workers in New England have a side hustle that brings in an average of $976 a month, bringing in around $12,000 a year shared Boston 25 News.
It might not come as a surprise that so many workers in the state are taking additional jobs.
Mass. has the second highest cost of living in the U.S., according to an analysis from Forbes Advisor. Additionally, consumer prices are rising quickly in the Boston area — as of May 2024, inflation on all items has increased 4.0% in the past year. Items like Florida Natural orange juice, which were $1.99 for consumers five years ago. Today, you’ll find it for $4.49, according to The Boston Globe.
So, what jobs are residents taking to keep up with the cost of living?
The top five side hustles across the state, according to WWLP-22News, include: podcasting, affiliate marketing, social media influencing, investing, and dropshipping (where products are sent directly from the supplier to the customer).
