‘Last call’ at Silvertone Bar & Grill after owner announces closure

The bar was a downtown mainstay for nearly 30 years.

Silvertone Bar & Grill, a downtown spot known for serving Miller High Life and bar bites to an after-work crowd, has closed its doors for good after nearly 30 years in business.

Owner David Savoie announced on Facebook that the neighborhood bar-restaurant had shuttered.

“Last call,” Savoie said. “Cheers to 27 years. Thank you everyone for the help making me fulfill a lifelong dream.”

Savoie, a regular of the bar, bought Silvertone from its original owners — Josh Childs, Maureen McGovern, Mary Palmer, and Katy Gehan-Childs — in 2016.

But only a handful of years later, COVID-19 hit, which Savoie told The Boston Globe was to blame for him losing his steady office crowd.

“We’re below nine floors of offices with zero percent occupancy,” Savoie said. “Our lunch and after-work crowd paid the bills.”

For several years now, similar dive bars and neighborhood restaurants have been decimated because of rising costs and the pandemic’s toll on businesses, like Pour House and Beacon Hill Pub.

It isn’t immediately clear what’s next for the Bromfield Street spot or for Savoie. But on Silvertone’s last night in business, Savoie told the Globe that the bar’s regulars throughout the years stopped in for one last beer and a plate of comfort food.

“I cannot thank the people that came through Silvertone the last few days enough,” Savoie said on Facebook. “I cried a river today, but it was tears of gratitude and love. Sometimes you forget that there are so many good people in your life. I’m a very lucky man.”
